Mawokota North MP Hillary Kiyaga, known as Dr Hilderman, has addressed his silence regarding corruption allegations against fellow legislator Mathias Mpuuga, citing respect and conflict of interest as the main reasons.

Mawokota North MP Hillary Kiyaga, popularly known as Dr Hilderman, has finally spoken out about his decision to remain silent amid corruption allegations against Mathias Mpuuga, the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament.

Mpuuga has been under scrutiny for receiving a controversial Shs500 million service award in 2022, which has led to a censure motion by some members of Parliament.

During a recent gathering, Dr Hilderman explained that his silence was not an act of indifference but a deliberate choice rooted in respect and integrity.

“Even court judges are advised to step aside in cases involving relatives to avoid conflicting interests," he remarked.

"I failed to decide on Mpuuga because of conflicting interest; he is my fellow Catholic and Muganda who has been guiding me and serving as my role model. How do you expect me to judge him?”

Dr Hilderman, a member of the National Unity Platform (NUP), emphasized that his decision to stay silent was driven by a desire to avoid conflict and maintain integrity.

He stressed that rushing to judgment without thorough consideration would have been irresponsible.

“Was I expected to condemn him to crucifixion? It was necessary for me to remain silent, as that is the level of respect instilled in us from a young age. It is preferable to keep quiet rather than risk bringing harm,” he said.

He also highlighted the importance of analyzing the situation carefully before making any public statements.

"Integrity has always been a part of my character, which is why I made the decision to stay silent. In my silence, I opt to analyze the situation thoroughly."

Dr Hilderman’s stance has drawn mixed reactions from the public and fellow lawmakers. Some have praised his commitment to integrity and thoughtful deliberation, while others have criticized him for not taking a stand against corruption.

In response to the pressure from critics, Dr Hilderman asserted that he would not be swayed by public opinion or political pressure.

"I will not be swayed by pressure and will follow my heart in deciding how to proceed," he stated. "It's crucial to act based on thorough understanding and personal principles rather than knee-jerk reactions."

The controversy surrounding Mpuuga has underscored the complex dynamics within Uganda’s political landscape, where loyalty, respect, and personal relationships often intersect with the demands for accountability and transparency.

Dr Hilderman’s approach to the issue reflects these complexities and highlights the challenges lawmakers face in balancing personal integrity with public duty.

As the debate continues, Dr Hilderman’s measured response serves as a reminder of the importance of careful consideration and respect in addressing allegations of corruption within political ranks.

His decision to prioritize integrity and thoughtful analysis over immediate condemnation may set a precedent for how such issues are navigated in the future.
