In the aftermath of a tragic road accident that claimed the life of prominent businessman Apollo Nyegamehe, popularly known as Aponye, the driver of his vehicle, Moses Buyinza Isabirye, has been taken into custody at Ntungamo Police Station on allegations of reckless driving. The accident occurred last week at Itojo along the Ntungamo-Kabale road.
The collision involved Aponye's V8 Toyota Land Cruiser with registration number UBF 300Z and a Fuso truck bearing registration number UAZ 767D. Alongside Aponye, his brother and Buyinza were also in the vehicle at the time of the incident. While Aponye sadly lost his life, his brother and Buyinza sustained injuries and were promptly rushed to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital for medical attention.
Following their recovery, the police took Buyinza into custody. Samson Kasasira, the Rwizi Region police spokesperson, confirmed the arrest and stated that investigations are underway to determine any possible negligence that may have led to the fatal accident.
A team comprising traffic officers, crime investigators, and forensics revisited the accident scene, gathering additional evidence to aid in the inquiry. The case file has been forwarded to the Resident State Attorney for review and guidance on the next course of action.
Kasasira revealed that efforts are also being made to locate the driver of the Fuso truck, which was loaded with Irish potatoes. Investigators have identified the owner of the truck and are urging them to cooperate in identifying the driver, which would provide valuable assistance in the ongoing investigations.
