Blissful news on our desk indicates that Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has undergone a successful surgery on his spine/cervical disc at Fontis Memorial hospital in Gurugram, New Delhi – India.
A few days, the Lord Mayor announced lthat he had been referred by “several neurosurgeons and other physicians” to New Delhi for the delicate operation.
Lukwago needed an Anterior Cervical Disc and Fusion surgery to remove the herniated one.
For the last two months, the swollen disc caused him a great deal of pain and paralysis in his back and left arm.
At the start of April, he was rushed to Nairobi Hospital after doctors at Nakasero Hospital confirmed his condition via an MRI.
Lukwago however, returned from Nairobi weeks later without the surgery.
He said he needed to consult first about the operation.
“The way they (Kenyan doctors) explained it to me, it was so scary so I thought I should first go back home and reflect on it. Right now I am undergoing that process of counselling myself. I have also received a lot of advice from experts including Dr (Kizza Besigye," he said while speaking to the media.
Lukwago later flew to New Delhi to have a specialized Anterior Cervical Disc and Fusion surgery and according to the reports reaching our desk, the operation was a success.
The operation in India involved the removal of the swollen disc to relieve pressure on the spinal cord and nerve roots.
This was replaced with a bone graft, fastened with a metal plate to bridge the area.
In a Facebook update, Lukwago thanked God for making it possible for him to wake up from the operation theatre and the Intensive Care Unit where he spent several hours battling for life.
"Glory be to the Gracious Lord whose mighty Will made it possible for me to wake up from the operation theatre and the Intensive Care Unit of Fortis Memorial Hospital, Grugram, India where I spent several hours battling for life. Many thanks to the team of meticulous neurologists and all of you my dear friends for the love and prayers. Now on the recuperation journey, but atleast out of the woods," Erias Lukwago part of his post read on April 30.
He now has to live with the harsh reality of leaving his natural cervical disc in India and carrying an artificial one on the back for the remainder of his life. He will spend some days recovering in India then returnt o Uganda.?
