In a case of tit for tat, Ugandan football club Express FC has done what Vipers did last year.
Express has been declared the winners of the 2020/21 season of the Uganda Premier League In what was caused by the current predicament of Corona virus that Uganda is grappling with.
Uganda is currently in a 42-day total lockdown that president Museveni put in place due to a surge in Covid-19 daily infections and deaths.
FUFA that governs football in Uganda through the FUFA Emergency Executive Committee, made a decision to announce Express as champions because of an article in the FUFA Competition rules that makes it possible to declare a winner of the Uganda Premier League even if all games in the season haven't been played.
The rule stipulates that if a team has played atleast 75% of the games and is at the top of the league during circumstances of force majeure meaning a time when no match can be played, it will be declared as winner given that it has the highest number of points.
So just like that, Express bagged the 2020/21 season with 58 points, just 1 point ahead of second placed URA FC, Quite heartbreaking for URA, right??
This is the same way Vipers snatched it
Last year at around this same time, Kitende based Vipers SC also grabbed the 2019/20 Uganda Premier League trophy under similar circumstances.
The Venoms as they call themselves were leading the league with only 4 points ahead of second placed KCCA FC when the country was suddenly locked down because of the Corona Virus first wave in Uganda
The move was largely seen as unfair by many football pundits who said FUFA should have waited and organised for the remaining matches to be played behind closed doors but all in all, Vipers still won it at the time and it's now time for Express FC.
