WATCH VIDEO: Mathias Mpuuga speaks against NUP Term Limits, Wants Members to stay in power for long
While away on official duty in Washington DC, Leader of Opposition in Parliament Hon. Mathias Mpuuga Nsamba missed his party (NUP) delegates conference at their premises in Kavule, Makerere!
The conference imposed a two term limit on all party leaders and leaders elected on the party flag to positions of power and leadership.
In his take on the move, Mpuuga was against the development explaining that it will force some of the party's good politicians to join other parties or stand as independent candidates in elections.
“A Member of Parliament or a mayor can’t make a final decision. Therefore, even if you haven’t given them a party flag, people can give them another mandate as they wish,” Mr Mpuuga said.
He added that leadership requires experience and in a case of Parliament, at 2 terms, a legislator is only ripe to start articulating serious matters on the floor of Parliament unlike when they were still fresh.
He therefore guided that with two terms, their party will keep having only inexperienced members of the August house which will in the long run portray them as a weak party.
With their new ideology, one cannot be a party President, chairperson or secretary General for more than Two terms.
In the same vein, one cannot be a Member of Parliament or councilor under the NUP party ticket for more than two terms.
It should however be noted that this provision will become operational starting with the next elective term in 2026.
