John Birungi Babirukamu, a seasoned digital marketer, tragically took his own life on May 31 by jumping off the fifth floor of an apartment building in Kamwokya, a suburb of Kampala. At 40 years old, Babirukamu’s death has left many who knew him grappling with unanswered questions and profound sadness.
Babirukamu was described by colleagues as a reserved individual who rarely spoke throughout the day, but his ambition was evident as he juggled multiple projects simultaneously. Despite his professional success, those close to him believe that his demanding lifestyle and high standards may have contributed to his untimely death.
In a poignant note left on his family WhatsApp group, Babirukamu wrote, “I apologize for being an inconvenience in death as I was in life. I have given it my all and now I find myself with only emptiness. I do sincerely love you all, and hope you find it in your hearts to forgive me. Kiss my nieces and nephews for me. They are the last joy that I held onto.”
A friend and former colleague at NBS TV recalled Babirukamu’s perfectionist nature. He recounted an incident where Babirukamu led a digital campaign and faced backlash for a mistake made by his team.
“He blew up and then went to the toilet and cried. He came back, sat at his desk, and remained speechless for hours. He did not want to mess up,” the friend shared.
Babirukamu’s struggle with small mistakes often led him to agonize over them for days.
Socially, Babirukamu was known to keep to himself. On the rare occasions he went out, he enjoyed a cold Guinness and had a fascination with various tea spices, which he collected and spoke about passionately. Despite his few social indulgences, he preferred to work quietly, often staying at the office from 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM.
Friends noted that Babirukamu lived a sedentary lifestyle and had a penchant for junk food. He seldom discussed his family or personal life, maintaining a private and secluded existence. At the time of his death, he was the general manager at Hedge Marketing Agency and had previously held prominent positions at MTN, NBS TV, NTV, Uganda Breweries Limited, Equity Bank, BRAC, and Sheraton Kampala, among others.
Babirukamu’s tragic end has highlighted the immense pressure and isolation that can accompany high-achieving individuals. His passing serves as a solemn reminder of the importance of mental health and the need for support systems, both in personal and professional spheres. As those who knew him mourn his loss, they hope his story will encourage others to seek help and support in times of need.
