    • February 17, 2024 • 11 months ago
    • Russian opposition figure and and outspoken Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny died aged 47, the Russian Prison Service said.
    • The deceased made global headlines in 2020 when he was poisoned with a nerve agent.
    • Global leaders and defenders of democracy all expressed their grief and at  the untimely death of the Russian oppositionist.

The Russsian prison service came out to annouce the death of the jailed Kremlin critic who paased away in the penal colony prison over 260 miles North East of Moscow.

The opposition figure had been imprisoned to the Siberian penal colony prison where he was serving multiple sentences of fraud, extremism and other charges though he strongly denied all these accusations.

World leaders have reacted with waves of shock and sadness to Navalny death with the U.S president Joe Biden saying that no mistake must be made "Putin is responsible" the 46th president of the United States said.

The widow of the 2020 globa headliner vowed that the Kremlin leaders will be brought to justice citing the strict opposition censorship that has headlined the country for years right from the rule of fallen president Boris Yeltsin.

Navalny had been a pain in the neck for President Vladimir Putin, exposing corruption in high places, campaigning against the ruling United Russian party and orchestrating some of the biggest anti government protests seen in the recent years.

In 2021, Navalny was charged and found guilty of fraud and extremism by a Russian district court where he was accorded a 30 year prison sentence which would see him out of jail at 77.

The start of 2024 saw the St. Petersburg born transfered to the Siberian Artic penal cord prison after he was termed as a high profile criminal by the same court endangering his life.

He was arrested following his return to Russian after treatment from an attempted assassination in 2020 and has been since served by a wife and two children.

World leaders have continued to pour in their  their concerns about the demise of democracy in the Slav dominated Russian nation.

Speaking from the from the Roosevelt room of the White House, President Joe Biden exerted all the blame on Putin for the reported death of the opposition figure saying it all started with multiple sentences that were politically motivated by the Russian head of state.

Navalny death comes in short of the pre anticipated Russian elections scheduled for 17th of March this year with many having the view that Putin's win is already a foregone conclusion.

Alexei Navalny has also become the fourth Putin critic to die in just two years with the fallen Wagner Chief Yevgeny Prigozhin taking third after he was killed in a plane crush last year.
