As a global norm, Ugandans always join the rest of the world to celebrate the new year by lighting firworks in approved places. These 5-10 minutes after midnight are always waited for eagerly and are very memorable. Unfortunately, Ugandans are to enter 2022 without fireworks, as it happened while we entered 2021.
While addressing journalists at the Naguru Police Headquarters, Police spokesperson Fred Enanga informed the public that due to the current state of Covid-19, there shall be nofireworks as these normally cause gatherings and might lead to more spreading of the virus.
"We wish to inform all stakeholders, hotels owners, churches, and all other wealthy people who had planned to light fireworks that it will not be possible because of the state th country is in. Such occasions lead to converging of people in big numbers and might lead to more spread of the virus. We however encourage people to go on with celebrations in their homes, in numbers that are regulated." Enanga said.
The police also banned overnight prayers that are normally done in stadiums and churches on 31st as christians enter the new year through prayer. "People always collect in big stadiums and churches to pray. During prayer, the excitement gets too much and some forget about the SOPs which exposes them to Covid-19. These too have been banned from happening." Enanga addded.
Ugandans were also warned against terrorist attacks, given the recent bombings that have happened in various places across the country.Ugandans of course had to react the Ugandan way on learning about the news, with many saying the move is just unfair and unrealistic. What do you think? Should we have gone ahead to celebrate the new year in the usual way or the police is spot on this time round?
