    • January 2, 2025 • 3 months ago
    in summary
Uganda recorded 55 deaths during the three-day Christmas celebrations, linked to 91 crime cases, reflecting improved safety compared to 2023. Key incidents included violent crimes and a tragic child kidnapping. Police arrested 19 suspects, highlighting their commitment to tackling crime despite persistent challenges.

Uganda recorded a sad 55 deaths across the country during the three-day Christmas celebrations from December 24 to December 26, 2024. These fatalities were linked to 91 reported crime cases, marking a reduction compared to the 110 cases reported during the same period in 2023. The decline highlights improved public safety measures during the past festive season.

    Causes of Fatalities

The police report detailed various causes behind the 55 deaths. Twelve victims were killed in assaults, while three were hacked to death. Drowning claimed the lives of two individuals, and two others were lynched by mobs.

Seven people died from injuries caused by blunt objects, six were stabbed, and five committed suicide. Additionally, two fatalities resulted from strangulation, and five others were classified as suspected sudden deaths.

Reckless and negligent acts led to four deaths, while one case each was linked to food poisoning and suspected arson. A single murder remains under investigation. A particularly tragic incident involved the death of a four-year-old child during a kidnapping for ransom.

    Police Response and Key Incidents

Nineteen suspects were arrested in connection with the reported murder cases during the festive period. Despite these incidents, police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke described the Christmas celebrations as largely peaceful across the country.

One of the most alarming incidents involved a child’s kidnapping and subsequent murder. The victim’s mother received a demand for Shs 15 million in ransom. She promptly reported the matter to authorities, who launched a swift investigation.

Security forces apprehended the suspect, Ivan Natukunda, on December 24 using advanced intelligence tools. During questioning, Natukunda disclosed that the child had been killed by the primary suspect, Mr.Robert Rwabajungu, alias Kadeyideyi. Both suspects are currently in police custody as investigations proceed.

    Observations and Outlook

The decrease in reported crimes during the Christmas season reflects progress in maintaining public safety. However, challenges persist, particularly concerning violent crimes and reckless behavior.

Police efforts in high-profile cases, such as the kidnapping, demonstrate their commitment to addressing criminal activities and improving security. Authorities emphasized the need for continued vigilance and community cooperation to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

As Uganda reflects on the mixed outcomes of this festive season, the focus remains on sustaining safety improvements while addressing underlying causes of crime.

The report reflects Uganda's progress in improving public safety, yet challenges with violent crimes and negligence highlight the need for strengthened law enforcement, community vigilance, and preventive measures.
