On Saturday 22nd at around 9pm, an active volcano erupted in Goma in Congo.
Mountain Nyiragongo located near Lake Kivu opened up and sent lava flowing down into villages.
This volcano is said to have the fast moving lava and as of today had reached the international airport in Goma.
Over 5000 people have been displaced since homes, schools, health centres were destroyed in fires caused by lava.
As of today Monday 24th May 2021, 150 people have been declared dead.
Many of these died in car accidents that happened on the road as many people were fleeing from affected areas while 5 of them died from fatal burns gotten
The UN is sending help to all the unaccompanied children as many parents have declared their children as missing.
The Ministry of Emergency in Rwanda mentioned that over 3000 displaced people moved into Rwanda seeking help and shelter for now.
Residents of Goma have all evacuated and kept clear of the place since no one knows how long this eruption will keep happening.
We have provided help and shelter to the people who crossed through Lake Kivu to get into Rwanda. We have so far received 3000 people. The rest are using other areas to cross the border into Rwanda. We shall try as much as we can to help the people we have.
Mountain Nyiragongo is known as an active volcano and usually erupts every after 10-20 years.
The last volcanic eruption happened in 2002 and over 500 people died then.
All international organization and NGOs are sending in help to the people of Congo in form of food, water, medical supplies among others.
Celebrities such as Nicki Minaj, Will Smith, Maurice Kirya, Irene Ntale among others have sent personal messages to the people of Congo.
A hashtag #prayforcongo has been used and is the most trending on social media.
