The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has officially announced President Yoweri Museveni as its flag bearer for the upcoming 2026 Presidential Elections. The confirmation came from NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong during celebrations of the NRM Day in Serere District over the weekend.
Addressing attendees, Todwong emphasized that President Museveni is prepared to continue serving the country and will stand as the party's candidate in the upcoming elections.
"He will be our flag bearer come 2026, and he is ready to serve the country," Todwong declared.
Todwong cited President Museveni's role in ensuring peace and stability in Uganda as pivotal factors in the decision to nominate him for another term. He asserted that until another candidate emerges with comparable credentials to lead Uganda forward, President Museveni remains the most suitable candidate.
Highlighting various initiatives aimed at consolidating Museveni's legacy and ensuring continuity, Todwong mentioned the MK Movement and the Uganda Patriotic League, both spearheaded by Museveni's son, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, as well as the pressure group Mzee Tova Ku Main. He described these entities as complementary efforts working towards the same goal of sustaining President Museveni's leadership.
Todwong characterized internal disagreements within the NRM, particularly among factions associated with different groups, as inconsequential in the grand scheme of the party's objectives. He dismissed these conflicts as mere struggles for positions and limited opportunities within the party.
"These fights are not logical; they are just fights for positions and limited opportunities we have," Todwong remarked, underscoring the need for unity and focus within the NRM as it prepares for the upcoming elections.
With this announcement, the NRM has set the stage for President Museveni's candidacy in 2026, reaffirming its commitment to his leadership and vision for Uganda's future.
