Uganda mourns the loss of Cecilia Ogwal, a prominent political figure and former Miss Uganda, as the Speaker of Parliament, Ms. Anita Among, announced her passing on Thursday. The 77-year-old Member of Parliament for Dokolo District Women's Constituency succumbed to cancer at a hospital in India.
In a statement on the official X platform, Speaker Among expressed her condolences.
"It is with a heavy heart and pain that I announce the passing of our Mother, Mentor, and role model Imat Cecilia Atim Ogwal, the Honourable Member representing the Women of Dokolo District. I send my sincere sympathies to her dear husband and the family, friends, the people of Lango, and colleagues! May her soul find eternal rest." she posted.
Cecilia Ogwal, renowned for her beauty as a former Miss Uganda, transitioned into politics, making significant contributions to the Ugandan political landscape. She served as the Acting Secretary General of the Uganda People's Congress (UPC) from 1985 to 1992. Additionally, Ogwal played a vital role in the Constituent Assembly responsible for drafting the country's 1995 Constitution.
Her political journey faced challenges, as she lost the Lira Municipality seat to Jimmy Akena during the 2006 parliamentary elections. However, in 2011, Ogwal emerged victorious, securing the Women's Representative seat for Dokolo District on the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party ticket.
