    Social media shutdown in Uganda.
    • January 11, 2021 • 4 years ago

Elections are this week and as always, social media is not accessible to those that pay their OTT.

Many Ugandans complained of not being able to access or download VPNs on Google play store.

Later on, majority of the Ugandans on the blue app, Facebook complained of how they could  not post, comment or load  any photos or videos.

VPN is an app that you are able to use in case of a social media shutdown and furthermore, it changes your location.

You will be in Uganda but if one took time to find your location, it would say Germany or France, whichever country it shows you are in.

Tik tok and Instagram videos were not playing or loading, same applied to Snapchat.

Many people anticipated this to happen and downloaded their VPNs early so as to report to the world everything that is happening during election time.

It is a well known fact that most of the world nowadays including news agencies get the news off social media.

As of today, things had gone back to normal as people did not need to use their VPN but who knows when this shut down will suddenly happen again.

The first official shutdown of social media happened in the 2016 elections and as we anticipate for the most heated and feared election by majority of Ugandans, we ask you to vote and keep safe.
