Uganda is in mourning as it bids farewell to one of its most candid and respected political figures, Hon. Hussein Kyanjo, who passed away on Saturday morning. Known for his unwavering integrity and dedication to the betterment of his country, Kyanjo leaves behind a legacy that will be remembered for generations to come.
Hailing from Ntuuma village in Masaka district, Kyanjo's journey to becoming a celebrated politician was marked by determination and resilience. Despite facing academic challenges, he refused to give up on his dreams, repeating senior six to gain admission to Makerere University, where he pursued a degree in Fine Art.
Embracing his entrepreneurial spirit, Kyanjo founded a successful Private Design and Printing Company, setting himself apart from his peers. However, his true calling came in the late '80s when he was designated as the news anchor for Muslims at Nakasero Tabligh mosque. His eloquence and fearlessness in speaking out against the government's mistakes caught the attention of many.
In 1996, Kyanjo ventured into elective politics, becoming a founding member of the Justice Forum party (JEEMA). Although his first attempt at securing a parliamentary seat was unsuccessful, he handled defeat with dignity, setting a precedent for how politicians should conduct themselves in such situations.
Finally, in 2006, Kyanjo achieved his goal and secured a seat in parliament, representing the Makindye West constituency. Throughout his tenure, he remained committed to honesty and openness, advocating for the preservation of precious natural resources like the Mabira forest and promoting fair representation for all regions in parliament.
However, Kyanjo's political journey faced a sudden twist in 2011 when he was diagnosed with dystonia, a movement disorder that affected his ability to communicate effectively. Despite suspicions of poisoning due to his stance against corruption and the regime, Kyanjo remained resolute in his beliefs and continued to actively engage in political events.
His unwavering Islamic faith played a significant role in shaping his outlook on life, and he approached his health struggles with acceptance and faith in God's ultimate plan. Kyanjo's enduring resilience and determination served as an inspiration to those around him, leaving a lasting legacy of courage in the face of adversity.
Beyond his political pursuits, Kyanjo was a devoted family man. He formed a close-knit and loving family, cherishing his role as a husband and father. His deepest wish was to be remembered for his honesty, consistency, and respectfulness, and his legacy will undoubtedly endure through the values he upheld.
On Saturday morning, Hon. Hussein Kyanjo peacefully passed away at Kibuli Muslim Hospital, leaving behind a nation mourning the loss of a fearless and principled leader. As Ugandans bid farewell to this remarkable man, they will remember him not only for his political contributions but also for his unwavering commitment to justice and his dedication to building a more just and equitable society.
Hon. Hussein Kyanjo's legacy serves as a challenge to all, urging citizens to uphold the values he held dear: honesty, consistency, and respect for others. As the nation mourns his passing, let us also reflect on the lessons he imparted through his distinguished career and strive to carry forward the torch of unwavering integrity in our own endeavors. Uganda has lost a true champion, but his spirit will continue to guide and inspire those who walk the path of justice and righteousness.
