The journey of the Uganda Volleyball Lady Cranes has not been a smooth one in the ongoing CAVB Women’s African Nations Volleyball Championships in Yaounde - Cameroon.
Despite starting off with two consecutive wins against Lesotho (3-0) and Morocco (3-2), the Lady Cranes suffered two huge losses against Kenya (0-3) and Rwanda (3-2) on Saturday. This left their hopes of qualifying very slim and many seemed to have lost hope.
However, yesterday the ladies put on a spirited fight against another West African country Burkina Faso in a do-or-die match to see who would qualify for the quarter finals. Tonny Lakony’s Lady Cranes started off on high note, winning the first round 25-14.
Their first set win win gave the Lady Cranes a good pace, that saw them winning the second and third set 25-12 and 25-18, respectively and thus smiling their way into their first ever quarter final of the tournament since they started participating in it.
The Lady Cranes will now face off against North Africa's giants Eqypt in the quarter finals and have a chance to better their 2009 performance where they finished ninth.
