WATCH VIDEO: Vipers SC soccer team celebrates Uganda Premier League 22/23 trophy victory
The Startimes Uganda Premier League gave Ugandan foootball fans an epic climax yesterday, thanks to the three clubs SC Villa, Vipers FC and KCCA who were direct title contenders. Before the last games, Villa was leading the table with 52 points while Vipers and KCCA were 2nd and 3rd respectively with 50 points each.
All Villa had to do was to beat URA FC at Wankuluku stadium and be crowned champions. However, things got sour for the Jjogo club when URA's Najib Fesali scored a header in the 61st minute giving the tax collectors the lead.
Villa kept on pressing and attacking until the last minute but failed to find an equalizer. On the other hand it was raining goals at St. Mary's Kitende and Lugogo indoor stadium. Vipers who had hosted Busoga United scored 5 goals to take them on top of the table and KCCA too scored 5 goals against Solitilo Bright Stars and finished 2nd behind Vipers FC with a 6goals difference.
Vipers' win took their championship tally to 6titles, the five having come in the 2010/11, 2015/16, 2017/18, 2019/20 and 2021/22 seasons. The Lawrence Mulindwa boys walked away with a whooping Sixty Million Uganda Shillings as Prize money.
