The Katikkiro of Buganda, Owek. Charles Peter Mayiga yesterday during the kingdom's 29th Lukiiko gave a detailed speech where he addressed a number of both cultural and national issues. Among the issues he addresed were the crazy Commodity prices, crime rates and the coffee deal.
Buganda region is one of the largest coffee growers in the country and whatever affects coffee growth, does affect the region's coffee as well and this explains why there's been an increasing outroar from the different stakeholders in the coffee business since the Coffee deal between the govenment of Uganda and the Italian investor Vinci was signed.
The Katikkiro, yesterday raised complaints in regards to the deal, which according to him is meant to put coffee growers out of business but boost it, like how the govenment claims. "Coffee is not only grown in Buganda alone but in other regions like Ankole, Toro, Teso and others. These too are in fear over this new coffee bill." Said the Katikkiro
The Katikkiro also expressed his concern on the kind of investor Vinci is, and wondered how an investor who neither has money to invest nor a seedling of coffee can be given such monopoly over a whole country's coffee business.
Speaking about the high commodity prices, the Katikkiro refenced the president's statements where he told people to eat cassava if bread is expensive. "You told us to eat cassava. Yes, we shall eat it but bread too is sweet. Reduce on the commodity prices so we can eat bread as well." Katikkiro said.
Now that the Katikkiro has come out to speak about the two most important national issues in the country right now, should we expect immidiate action from the government or we continue eating our muwogo?
