A while back, legendary music producer Washington was trending for having called out musicians for what he believe to be mistreating music producers. According to Washington, musicians were simply using producers while paying them peanuts instead of giving them their royalties to the songs they have worked on.
Washington stated that unlike music Producers in other Countries, the ones in Uganda are suffering because they are denied royalties on the songs they have worked on. He stated that in other countries, producers keep earning on a song they produced until time immemorial but in Uganda, producers are paid peanuts yet they are the driving force of the industry.
He stated that music lovers would never listen to their favorite musicians if they sung their raw music without a touch from music producers as they sound like bloated frogs.
Very many people came out to bash Washington, stating that once there is an agreement between a Producer and a musician, that deal is sealed and once a producer is paid for their job, it is done and he should therefore not be out there complaining about royalties that were never discussed in the beginning of the project.
Well, Washington still stands by his word. According to him, music producers are the electricity that drives the musicians as the musicians only present the songs, then the producers have to make their songs shine. Washington stated that musicians need to understand this and treat producers better of the music industry is to prosper.
“We the producers are very important in the music industry. We are the electricity that drives the turbines. When musicians present their songs, we need to make the songs shine.” He stated.
Washington further went on to state that the music industry is currently in a sorry state because Music producers are so frustrated with musicians mistreating them and giving them peanuts. He stated that in the end, they also do a lousy job just for the sake of it but yet they could do better if they were handled better.
“Listen to the songs that are being released these days. It is even too ashaming for the Country. I cant even blame music producers. They are very frustrated after being mistreated by Musicians. Now they no longer do a wholesome job, they just do what they deem fit.” He stated
Washington also stated that Ugandan music used to compete internationally back then before music producers had gotten fed up of the system. He recollected how Ugandan music used to also appear on big name platforms like MTV, Channel O and AFRIMA and Uganda was always well represented, which can not happen anymore since Music producers are too frustrated to make wholesome projects.
