First son Lieutenant General Muhoozi Kainerugaba has retired from the Ugandan army. At the time of his voluntary retirement, Muhoozi has been serving as the Commander of the Land Forces of the UPDF - Uganda People’s Defence Forces.
Muhoozi announced his retirement through his Twitter platform where he tweeted saying “ After 28 years of service in my glorious military, the greatest military in the world, Iam happy to announce retirement. Me and my soldiers have achieved so much! I have only love and respect for all those great men and women that achieve greatness for Uganda everyday.”
Muhoozi’s move to retire comes at a time when the talk of him being prepared to succeed his father President Museveni as Ugandan leader are fast spreading for years now with escalation since the 2021 elections. Muhoozi now awaits the full process of his resignation being accepted by the army protocol as guided by the constitution. He held many positions in the army until his father and commander in chief promoted him to the rank of Major General in May 2016. Three years later, he again promoted him to the rank of Lieutenant General which is the second highest rank in the Ugandan army.
