While addressing television and Radio stations owners at the National Association of Broadcasters confrence, ICT minister Hon. Chris Baryomunsi reminded the public thatthe Computer Misuse Act is set to be revised and more strong penalties introduced to curb the ever increasing misuse of the internet.
The Uganda Media Council had come out a while back to request all media companies to register, as away of smooth monitering and the minister empasized that the idea has no bad motives but rather helps the government know how many journalists it's working with.
Asked about the Computer Misuse Act, the minister said that the existing law isbeing revised because it's not as strong as it 's meant to be. "Some people misuse the social media. They announce dead peopelwho're still alive, intimidate people among other activities. The Computer misuse Act is in existence but it's not enough. We're going to revise it and come up with a better act that will combart the violators of the platforms." Said the Minister.
The function was organized to elect a new cexecutive committee for the National Association of Broadcasters. With the ongoing ban on the most used app in the coutry Facebook, over issues concerning social media misuse, and the continued harrassment of people through different social media platforms, should we hope the law will make amends or 'we're on our own?'
