In his annual end-of-year message to the people of Buganda Kingdom, Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II highlighted the need for caution in the use of social media, urging parents to actively monitor their children's online activities to mitigate potential risks.
While recognizing the significance of social media as a tool for connection and communication, Kabaka Mutebi underscored the moral concerns associated with its use. In particular, he expressed concern about cyber harassment and its impact on the younger generation.
"Parents should monitor what their children are sharing on social media as well as their circle of friends," the Kabaka emphasized, emphasizing the importance of guiding children on the appropriate use of digital platforms.
Championing the preservation of culture, Kabaka Mutebi encouraged the youth to focus on promoting and protecting their cultural heritage rather than misusing social media. His message reflected a broader concern about the potential misuse of online platforms and the importance of responsible digital citizenship.
The Kabaka also commended Buganda Kingdom leaders and Members of Parliament representing the region for their dedication to Buganda's interests. He applauded their efforts in fostering development and unity within the kingdom, emphasizing that conversations surrounding Buganda Kingdom should contribute to its progress and that of the entire nation.
However, Kabaka Mutebi acknowledged existing challenges, including detractors he identified as enemies of the kingdom, hindering its prosperity. He emphasized the importance of unity among the youth from the Buganda region, urging them to speak with one voice and defend the kingdom as leaders of the next generation.
Looking ahead, the Kabaka unveiled plans for the kingdom, including collaborations with institutions beneficial to Buganda's interests. The announcement showcased a commitment to strategic partnerships aimed at advancing the kingdom's goals.
In a separate communication, the Katikkiro, Mr. Charles Peter Mayiga, during an end-of-year media engagement, echoed the importance of protecting journalists' rights and ensuring their safety while on duty. He commended the government for improved treatment of journalists during the year and urged for the continuation of these positive trends into the coming year. Mr. Mayiga also cautioned journalists against the dissemination of false news, emphasizing the need for responsible reporting.
As Buganda Kingdom prepares for the new year, the messages from its leaders reflect a commitment to navigating the challenges posed by social media while emphasizing the importance of unity, cultural preservation, and responsible journalism.
