A significant portion of Kampala's roads will be temporarily closed to motorists tomorrow as President Yoweri Museveni marks his 79th birthday with a grand celebration at the iconic Kololo Independence Grounds.
The 79th birthday extravaganza for the President is organized by a group of enthusiastic youths under the leadership of the National Coordinator in the Office of the NRM National Chairman, Hadijah Uzeiye Namyalo. In anticipation of the event, the traffic flow plan was released on Thursday afternoon by Kampala Metropolitan Traffic Police Commander, Senior Superintendent of Police, Godwin Arinaitwe.
According to Arinaitwe, the birthday celebration is expected to draw a remarkable crowd of approximately 100,000 guests hailing from various parts of the country. He emphasized the importance of vigilance and adherence to traffic guidelines for the smooth conduct of the event.
The traffic management plan outlines several key diversions and road closures. Notably, normal traffic flow will be maintained at Golf Course traffic lights towards Acacia Avenue. However, diversions will be in effect around Upper Kololo Terrace, Elgon Terrace, and Lower Kololo Terrace, where only VVIPs will be permitted access.
Arinaitwe provided specific instructions for those traveling from different directions:
Motorists coming from Bombo Road are advised to use Old Kira Road, Lugogo Bypass, and park at KCCA grounds behind Shoprite.
Travelers from Jinja are encouraged to park at UMA showgrounds.
Those approaching from Entebbe can utilize Kampala Road, Jinja Road traffic lights, Lugogo Bypass, and park at KCCA grounds.
Nansana residents are advised to take Yusuf Lule Road, Golf Course traffic lights, Nakumatt, Jinja Road traffic lights, Wampeewo Roundabout, and park at KCCA grounds or UMA showgrounds.
Motorists from Prince Charles Drive will be diverted through the Archer Road Junction, leading to Jinja Road Police Station, where they can rejoin the main road.
Arinaitwe concluded with a plea to the public to diligently follow the traffic flow plan and adhere to the provided guidelines to ensure the event's success and safety.
As the nation prepares to celebrate President Museveni's 79th birthday, the temporary road closures are a necessary measure to facilitate the festivities while maintaining order and safety on Kampala's streets.
