The KCCA FC Stadium will be known as the MTN Omondi Stadium after the club and telecommunication giants, MTN, reached an agreement to span 10 years.
“We considered it befitting that we further cement our association to this club. This partnership will be executed as part of the club’s bigger plans to upgrade its home,” said MTN Uganda chief marketing officer Somdev Sen yesterday at the stadium.
The 13-time league champions and 10-time Uganda Cup winners based in Lugogo have also awakened club legend, Phillip Omondi’s legacy by adding his initials to the latest stadium name.
Omondi played at KCCA between 1973 and 1979, helping the side dominate locally and regionally before joining United Arab Emirates side Sharjah FC. He would later return as coach before retiring in 1992 and passing away in 1999.
“Phillip Omondi had an illustrious career, so MTN and KCCA FC felt that his name should be kept alive,” added Somdev. At the same event, Omondi was also eulogised by club vice-captain Julius Poloto before a painting of the icon was unveiled.
Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, also the club patron, talked about plans of transforming the stadium into a state of the art facility in the near future. “Everything is set. It’s just the bureaucracy delaying. There is still a lot required to uplift the standards and that is why we have plans of a modern complex accepted by Caf,” said Lukwago.
