On 20th April 20 years ago, Arsenal won the league at White Hart Lane after securing a draw against Tottenham Hotspur. This time the North London Derby may not be the last match to secure Arsenal the premier league title, but it is a match that will decide whether Arsenal are still in the title race. With Liverpool failing to get all the three points from their last match against Westham and settling for a draw (2-2), both Manchester City and Arsenal will be hoping to keep their title hopes alive by trying to secure a win in their upcoming matches.
The North London Derby looks to be more exciting this time round as Arsenal will have to defeat Tottenham to keep their title hopes alive and Tottenham will have to defeat Arsenal to keep their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League next season. The North London Derby has been played 194 times with Spurs winning 61 games, Arsenal winning 81games and both teams settling for a draw in 52 games.
Arsenal have been in good form winning four of their last five premier league matches with their loss coming against Aston Villa while Tottenham have won two, lost two and drawn one of their last five premier league matches, a form they will be hoping to improve upon. As Spurs sold Harry Kane to Bayern Munich, he was the North London Derby top scorer with 14 goals. With Kane gone, Spurs will have to look to Heung-min Son who was next to Kane with 7 goals in the 19 games he has played against Arsenal. Son was also one of the scorers in Spurs' last encounter against Arsenal at the Emirates stadium which ended as draw (2-2) with Son scoring both goals for Tottenham Hotspur.
Son made a statement saying;
It’s a very special game. It means a lot for the club and for the fans, especially at home(Tottenham Hotspur Stadium). We don’t want to let anyone down. We want to make it a perfect day for the fans so they can go home with their chest out, with a smile on their face, to make them as happy as possible. We shouldn’t just think that it’s our game.It’s also for the club and the fans who come all the way to make it an amazing game and you have to respect that as a club and also take the responsibility to make it happen because it’s our home. It is going to be war. For them it is a very important time and a very important game. And for us as well. We want to make the club, fans and ourselves proud.
