In a significant move to enhance Uganda’s tourism infrastructure, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni presided over the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Government of Uganda and the United Arab Emirates' Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
President Museveni expressed his satisfaction with the strengthened ties between Uganda and the Gulf countries, which he noted were previously non-existent.
"This MOU is a testament to the growing relationship between Uganda and the Gulf region.There is immense potential for investment that we must explore," Museveni stated.
The MOU outlines a comprehensive plan for the construction of Kidepo International Airport near Kidepo National Park and the development of tourist hotels within the park.
This initiative is expected to significantly boost Uganda's tourism sector and overall economy. The agreement was signed by the Government of Uganda through the Ministry of Works and Transport and Civil Aviation Authority, Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, and Uganda Wildlife Authority, in collaboration with the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
H.E Abdallah Sultan Al Owais, the Chairman of the Chamber, assured President Museveni of their commitment to the project.
"The construction of the airport is set to start in August 2024, and we promise to deliver good work on time," Al Owais declared.
His promise underscores the UAE's dedication to fostering economic and infrastructural development in Uganda.
The new airport and hotel facilities are expected to transform Kidepo National Park into a premier tourist destination, attracting more international visitors and enhancing local tourism.
"The construction of Kidepo International Airport will transform our tourism sector, providing easier access to one of our most beautiful national parks," said President Museveni.
He emphasized that this development will not only boost tourism but also create numerous job opportunities for Ugandans.
Maj. Gen. Kahinda Otafiire, Minister of Internal Affairs, Gen. Katumba Wamala, Minister of Works and Transport, and Hon. Martin Mugarra Bahinduka, State Minister for Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, witnessed the signing ceremony alongside H.E Abdalla Hassan Alshamsi, the UAE Ambassador to Uganda.
Their presence highlighted the broad support and high-level attention the project has garnered.The initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance Uganda's infrastructure and attract foreign investment.
With the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry's involvement, Uganda aims to leverage international expertise and capital to accelerate its development goals.
