Muslim students at The Institution for higher learning known as Kyambogo University are currently demanding for the deployment of female Muslim officer at security checkpoints after they were harrased in their need to access examinations rooms for their papers on Tuesday last week.
A video has been circulating of The said day displaying the actions of a male officer who was removing veils from the female Students before allowing them to access Central Learning Block (CLB) for their examination.
Female Muslims and the Muslim community as well are in chaos following the circulation of this video. Sheikh Bakhit Cucu the Education Secretary at Uganda Muslim Suprême Council (UMSC) said it's a breach of freedom of religion to treat the female Muslims in this way.
" To us Muslims, the nakedness of a woman starts from the head up to the toe so the moment you unveil her, you have undressed her. It is degeneration her dignity."
A similar incident is reported to have happened before in the same institution when Aisha Nanfuma was denied entry into the University because she refused to take her veil off.
Shadia Nankabirwa, a first year student offering archeology and heritage management said that this proves that Muslims are being targeted following recent terror attacks.
" It was massive by the way, if you had anything called a bonnet they did not want to know. We did plain hair. They told us if you dont want then move out of the examination room. They did not allow us to enter. They told us to remove the veils or get out. We had to do what they had requested because we needed to do the paper." She said.
Safina Musenero a student of arts in éducation called this an act of inequality.
"Sometimes you settle and think the community is inclusive enough until such things come up. The University should help us." She said
Elly Katunguka the vice chancellor of Kyambogo University issued a statement and promised to ensure it doesnt happen again again.
"We do not agree with the manner in which the police officer did it." He said.
