Yesterday Uganda and the rest of the world celebrated #WorldPressDay, a day put to celebrate the works of journalists in the entire world. However, the celebrations were met with mixed feelings from different stakeholders within the profession and ugandans at large.
Many decried the constant brutality done on journalists and claimed there's nothing to celebrate. Among these was National Unity Platform (NUP) spokesperson and Nakawa East MP elect Joel Ssenyoyi.
The former news anchor at NTV questioned the government and security officials about the justice of the brutalized journalists. According to Ssenyoyi, about 35 journalists were beaten up by security personnel while covering NUP campaigns.
The crimes go as early as 2018, during the infamous Arua incidents that when Kyagulanyi and team were campaigning for Kasiano Wadri.
However, ICT minister Judith Nabakooba while giving her speech promised an enhanced relationship between journalists and security officials. She also apologized for the shortcomings caused by security officials.
