While attending the women's day celebrations at the Bulange Mengo yesterday, Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja got bood by the women who had gathered for the function when she started talking about the new coffee bill.
The #TabamirukaBuganda as it the function was called, was held to celebrate women's achievements in the region and had a number of dignitaries, including the permanent secretary of the ministry of health, Dr. Diana Atwine, the Prime Minister herself, Her majesty the Nabagereka of Buganda Sylvia Nagginda, the Katikkiro, Owek. Charles Peter Mayiga and the His Majesty the Kabaka of Buganda, Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II.
"We need companies that can add value to our coffee. Powdered coffee is bought at 14 US Dollars a kilo, and ours here doesn't even make 1 US Dollar a kilo. That's why the government is looking for such investors to add value to our coffee so it can also be sold at a better price." said the prime minister.
Immidiately after her submission, Hon. Nabbanja instead of a great aplause and hand claps, she was recieved with boos from all corners of the tents, which lasted for almost a minute. While the Prime minister tried to mantain her calm and carry on with her speech, the women seemed to have made up their minds and refused to listen to what she was saying.
This came in at a time when the Katikkiro had already comfronted the government and its plans of monopolizing the coffee market, and give a 10 year contract to a one Italian investor named Vinci, whom the Katikkirio refered to as someone who's green about coffee, has not even a seedling of coffee but wants to 'make the coffee industry better!'
