As schools open on the 1st March 2021, over 100,000 girls have been reported pregnant.
Most of these pregnancies are from defilement cases or early marriages which mostly occurred in 2020 between March to December.
Majority of these girls are below 18 years of age.
Many of these cases have not been reported due to fear of being segregated in the community and the incompetence of the police.
It has also been reported that the police asks for money from the victims and the accused which has caused the low reports.
The worst districts include Kasese, Kitgum, Kabarole.
According to UNICEF, many children suffered emotional, physical and mental trauma while at home.
Many worked to help put bread on the table thus leading to an increase in child labor
The government has requested schools to allow these pregnant girls to return back to school and study .
