There is a certain belief among people that students or pupils that have attended Universal secondary Education and Universal Primary Education oriented schools would never measure up to their fellows who have attended Private schools. It is a belief that those who attend UPE and USE schools are lacking in skills as well as strong foundation. However much the government has tried to change minds of folks who tend to believe this, there hasn’t been any difference in many people’s opinion.
NBS TV presenter Canary Mugume has also lifted his voice in a bid to break barriers. According to him,, there is a lot of discrimination towards people who attended UPE and USE school’s, something he mentioned he has never understood. He therefore came out and disagreed with the discrimination going on amongst pupils over PLE results. His comments follow a submission by the Vision Group CEO, Don Wanyama about the same issue.
When the PLE results were released, Mr. Wanyama came out to condemn the stigma in schools where they only celebrated pupils with a first division and left out only two pupils who got a second division.
“This school had 60 kids sit PLE. All the rest got First Grade except two, who passed in Division Two (these got Aggregate 13 and 15). The school is allover celebrating their “success” and is publishing pictures of the 58 kids minus the two. Look, schools, this is outright stigma. Just imagine what’s going on the minds of these two kids whose results aren’t bad by the way, seeing their classmates faces plastered allover except them. Why do we stress this First Grade thing too much?“ Wanyama wrote.
On this basis, Canary Mugume weighed in on the debate saying that he is glad the Country is finally discussing education in this way. He went ahead to mention his back ground, saying he grew up in a poor family where they opted for free education but he is now a very famous and rich young man.
“I’m happy that we are having a conversation about our education. I’m a UPE & USE product. I’m happy because free education is the most bashed but God has brought us thus far. My parents were BROKE so they had no option. I fancied the ‘big’ schools but I now chill with the cool kids.” He said.
