Mpuuga Refuses Resignation Call from NUP, Denounces Allegations as Falsehoods
    • March 1, 2024 • 1 year ago
    in summary
Mathias Mpuuga, former Leader of Opposition and parliamentary commissioner, refuses to resign from his position despite calls from the National Unity Platform (NUP), citing baseless allegations of corruption and abuse of office. Mpuuga asserts that the controversial payments he received were legitimate and criticizes NUP's stance as spiteful and misrepresentative.

Former Leader of Opposition and current parliamentary commissioner, Hon. Mathias Mpuuga Nsamba, also Member of parliament for Nyendo-Mukungwe Constituency has defiantly rejected calls from the National Unity Platform (NUP) to step down from his position, dismissing allegations of corruption and abuse of office as baseless.

In a statement released on Friday, Hon Mathias Mpuuga vehemently refuted claims made by National Unity Platform officials, asserting that their advice for his resignation was founded on falsehoods and a misrepresentation of facts. The Nyendo-Mukungwe MP clarified that the controversial Shs500 million 'service award' he received from the Parliament of Uganda was allocated to him legally, following due process and scrutiny by relevant parliamentary committees.

"To call any such payments corruption is the highest level of spite, double standards and deliberate misrepresentation to the public and membership of the Party on a purely selfish mission," Hon. Mpuuga's statement read, addressing the allegations head-on.

Refusing to yield to what he termed as "spite, envy, and deliberate misrepresentation," Mathias Mpuuga declared his unwavering commitment to his position, vowing to withstand the orchestrated campaign against him. He highlighted a deliberate and funded character assassination campaign aimed at tarnishing his reputation, yet he remains steadfast in his dedication to serving above personal interests.

Despite facing criticism and internal strife within the party, Mathias Mpuuga emphasized his dedication to the NUP's principles and objectives, asserting his determination to uphold transparency and integrity within the party's management.

Mpuuga's response comes in the wake of a statement issued by National Unity Platfrom, wherein the party leadership called for his resignation over the alleged misappropriation of funds. However, Mpuuga denied attending any formal meeting where he supposedly acknowledged and apologized for the wrongdoing, stating that he only discussed the matter informally with party comrades.

Further challenging the allegations, Mathias Mpuuga urged the party to enforce accountability among all its members, suggesting that if the controversial payments were deemed corrupt, then all MPs, past and present, should be compelled to refund gratuities they've received over the years.

As the standoff between Hon. Mathias Mpuuga and National Unity Platform escalates, it underscores broader tensions within the party and raises questions about accountability and leadership integrity. With both sides digging in their heels, the coming days are likely to witness intensified scrutiny and debate over the handling of public funds and the ethical conduct of political leaders within Uganda's dynamic political landscape.

Additionally, Mpuuga said in an X - formerly twitter post that he will be offering more details about the matter wghile appearing on CBS FM Radio on Saturday morning.
