The President of the Republic of Uganda, H.E Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has declined to restore Facebook months since it was shut down.
The President revealed that several players in the country had appealed to him to let Facebook's chains fall off in the country since the election period is over.
However, Museveni said that business is going on as usual without Facebook's help. Even bananas are still being produced as always
He thus sees no reason why Facebook must be restored.
"The other day I checked to see whether bananas are still being produced. I thought bananas would stop if facebook closed. I checked and I found cows are still milking and fish is still in the lake,” Museveni said on Wednesday
“We can exist without facebook. Those biased people should not bother us.”
The President was welcoming participants in the recently concluding 2020 Olympic games in Tokyo.
*Why Museveni Shut Down Facebook.*
In January this year just before the elections kicked off, Facebook shut down accounts of several NRM members such as Bajjo and Full Figure over what it termed 'mis-use of their accounts.'
This seems not to have gone well with then, Presidential candidate, Museveni especially after his government requested Facebook to delete accounts of several NUP/People Power bloggers describing their accounts as 'dangerous to the nation's stability.'
Museveni responded by shutting Facebook down.
"Facebook decided to block NRM message centers. Why would anyone do that? I told my people to close it. If it is to operate in Uganda, it should be used equitably.” he said
However, many Ugandans remain un bothered by Facebook's woes in Uganda since many access it using Virtual Private Networks (VPNs)
